Jack Foster GUN is about the bad guy... stories about villains tend to fall into 3 main camps: either they're a revisionist take, like Wicked or more recently Maleficent, where you finally get the tale from their point of view and it turns out they were misunderstood or misremembered... the second take is you pit your villains against some force that's even worse, these are stories like Dexter, or the Suicide Squad. Finally you have out & out psychopaths, like American Psycho but characters like that are interesting to watch but hard to make a real connection with.
With GUN I didn't want to tell any of those stories. My thesis was that the hero's journey we're all familiar with, the hero finds a mentor, goes into the woods to defeat the dragon and save the village, and the villain's journey were the exact same thing, just going in opposite directions... the villain finds a mentor, goes into the woods to become the dragon that will destroy the village. That was the story I wanted to tell.
