A friend of a friend wanted to adopt a child from birth and she’d heard of a woman who was being forced to give up her baby because she was a drug addict.
I thought, what if that child was adopted and went to a lovely home, but then the father finds out what has happened and he wants his child back? What lengths would he go to find the daughter he believed had been stolen from him? Hmm, guess that’s the thriller writer in me, turning a happy story into something darker!

I got the idea for my first thriller, Bone by Bone, just after my daughter was born. I used to walk around Bristol to get her to sleep. My main route was through an urban nature reserve, or the allotments round where I live. I felt incredibly vulnerable - recovering from the birth, on my own in this urban wilderness and now responsible for a tiny, fragile newborn.
I started to imagine a character who has a much older daughter than mine, but feels vulnerable, isolated and lacking in confidence all the time. And I imagined what would happen if that person found out that her daughter was being bullied.
She would want to protect her child with all her heart, but she might not have the resources, both inner confidence, and family and friends around her, to do so.
What would happen if the bully has no boundaries? There is nothing that he will not do to her child...

I'm writing a new thriller, provisionally called 'Labyrinth'. It's set in Hackney, London, and it's about a young, female police officer, Maddison Jones. It's a re-imagining of Hitchcock's Vertigo. Watch this space!
