I'm inspired by the need to tell certain stories -- whether it's the long-forgotten story of the Georgian democratic socialists and the republic they created, or the story of a brave band of British commandos and their raid on Sark. These are stories that, I feel, need to be told.

Having completed work - which lasted for three decades - on Georgia, it's time to deal with an issue that came up in my research for the Georgia book: Stalin's early career as a double agent for the tsarist police. The book is tentatively called MOLE: STALIN AND THE OKHRANA and I hope to have it completed within the year.

My most recent book, The Experiment: Georgia's Forgotten Revolution 1918-1921, is something I've been working on (and off) for so many years that I don't really remember. I think I always knew that the Mensheviks had won power in just one part of the Russian empire after the fall of Tsarism, but it wasn't until the mid-1980s that I really started to get into the subject. The more I read about it, the more I understood the urgent importance of getting the word out that a democratic socialist alternative existed and exists. In my role in 2016 as an activist in Bernie Sanders' campaign, it became very clear to me that this message needed to get out to a wider audience.
