One of my favorite fictional couples is Jamie and Claire Fraser created by Diana Gabaldon in the Outlander series. Talk about undying love! Oh they have their ups and downs; they are not always honest with each other, they question each other’s motives, they get angry with each other. But still they find humor and joy in even the worst of circumstances. They are formidable characters on their own and will do whatever they must to protect the other. No matter the hardship endured or the comfort lost they love each other so much that they will do anything to stay together.

I got the idea for a time travel series more than 30 years ago. I knew the main character, that I wanted the books titles to be alphabetized and that they should be entertaining quick reads. Then it seemed as if the time-travel theme just erupted (the alphabet series too for that matter) so I gave it all up as fanciful dreaming. The thing is I couldn’t get them out of my heart. The books (oh maybe not every letter yet) are there pounding with every heart beat to be written. The first book in the time travel series had always been with an armoire – the A. The second, my most recent, was going to be Birth of a Bed and Breakfast, sticking with the B theme but the boots appeared and trumped. I’d also always known the second book would take place in the 1940’s. I love the idea of normal everyday things being more than they appear; magical. I love antiques and traveling. With guidelines like that it’s easy to come up with ideas.

I write as if I’m speaking to one of my nieces or nephews. I’ve always liked telling stories now I just write them down. It helps to know they are my audience. No matter how young or old (they range in ages from 2 – 38) I want to speak clearly so they can comprehend, colorfully so they can imagine and hopefully add little bits of wisdom as every good aunt should.

I’m working on Today is a B Day and third book in the Answers to Prayers series (yes there a C in it!). I can’t seem to stick with just one. One day I’ll write a little on each, one day I’ll write only on one and one day I may not write at all.

Follow your heart. Don’t let others discourage you or change your path. If The Lord has given you the inspiration (The Call) - write!

I feel lighter every time I write. I feel as if weight has been taken off my shoulders and air can move more freely through my lungs. I feel unburdened and free. If I feel like that after writing fun fiction imagine what you’ll feel like as you write that great novel!

For me it’s about discipline. I have to sit down and do it. One day at a time. I just sit and open the page. Sometimes words just flow. Sometimes I write a scene I can’t get out of my head even though I don’t know where it will fit in. Sometimes I write nonsense just to make myself type – sometimes that turns out to be good stuff, too! I imagine my niece sitting across from me and tell her what’s going on in the story.
