Can only say- from living, being observant of people who have passed my way, and from listening to the many stories in my head. Writing is one occupation where some age is a definite advantage!

My head is full of stories, plots and scenarios- I don't exactly know why. Sometimes I even dream them. Also my head is full of characters, well, being past 60 helps. Writing is one craft in which age is really a plus.

Same advice that the best writing teachers/writers will tell you (Stephen King's memoir on writing in particular)- there are 2 things every writer MUST do constantly- READ, and , WRITE. King advises you shut off the TV and every other useless, extraneous interruption. Personally, I cut the cable cord years ago.
Be observant of people- they'll be your source of characters in all your writing, how so ever disguised, how so ever many, many years later.

The right, the ability, to self express- that's paramount, whether through fiction or non-fiction, and I think the former is superior.

I don't know a better answer to this than to push through. I do create pages often that I end up tearing up- but don't let that bother you- we all do that.
