Tracy Patrick Read and read. Don't let commercialism or competitiveness put you off. Find the writers, subjects, forms that you love and follow them.
Tracy Patrick The surprises. By that I mean the themes that reoccur that indicate subconscious patterns and somehow reflect back your own story, almost like the characters you've invented are a mirror, the shadows and lights of your own preoccupations. Poetry is the same, but in a different way. There's less distance, and instead of characters, it may be recurring metaphors, images, or particular words and forms you find you have repeated. Writing allows you to process and to reflect back the world.
Tracy Patrick Ily Kaminsky, Deaf Republic, and Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot
