Dashiell Hammett's Nick and Nora Charles get such a kick out of each other. I was drawn into the intimate interdependency of E. L. Doctorow's hoarding Collyer brothers, Homer and Langley.

In 2009, I read a disturbing article about Caster Semenya of South Africa being subjected to gender testing after she won a gold medal in the 800 meters in the 2009 World Championships. I began exploring who among us is 100-percent anything. How do you successfully deal with the hand you’re played? By doing all you can with what you have.
Fast-forward to 2016 at the Rio Olympics. Semenya wins the gold medal, and one of the also-rans, Lynsey Sharp of Great Britain, is quoted by the London Telegraph as having said earlier in the summer that there were “two separate races” being run. This is not productive, because we’re all just searching for a home where we can use our gifts, not be ashamed of them. Where we can love and be loved.

I love to write in the morning, after a perfect cup of coffee, when everything is possible. I use a MacBook Air and sit down in my chair. When the chair starts to move, I’m off! Sometimes my characters can’t wait to get started. They tiptoe into my bedroom and wake me up.

I imagine my stories traveling into the ether, exotic and wild, even when I’ve left the room.

Because my unconscious self directs so much of my writing, I spend a moment wondering why I’m sensing a block in front of me. Sometimes the block reveals itself to be a door. Is my subconscious really trying to tell me I’m afraid of looking at something? That means it’s time to find out what it is.
