As anyone who has lived in rural Australia may know, the landscape leaves an indelible mark on you. It is a character unto itself. I grew up in an arid, harsh part of the country and want to explore that time, delve into some of the stories that shaped who I am today and bring this rough-hewn character of North-West Victoria to life.

When I was young, my mum would read to me and as we huddled on our beat-up old couch, I'd watch as she moved her finger along the page so I could follow the story, conscious that her fragmented English was difficult to understand. If we didn't have a book to read, she'd tell me stories about her life and explained to me that through stories we could learn about ourselves and the world around us.
I tend to spend a lot of time just watching people go about their lives and recalling my mother's words, I just know that there's a story to be told in whatever it is they're doing, no matter mundane it might appear.
I just want to tell those stories.

Ugh. Writer's block. It's the bane of any writer's existence. Over the years, I've found the best way to get through it is to stop bashing my head against the proverbial brick wall and start working on something else. As long as I'm writing something, even if it's just an email to a friend, I will invariably find a way to reinvigorate myself and find something to hang my next piece of prose on.
