Discovering things I didn't know about the world by putting one word in front of the other. Also getting mail from readers! It's so much fun and amazing and will never get old. Oh, and that time a kid at a school visit asked me to sign his forehead in Sharpie, because he thought I was famous.

So many of my books start with a "what if?" What if a boy discovered a bone in his backyard, then it grew into a full-sized skeleton only children can see? What would happen next? What if you could be with the people you love, even after they're gone? What if you started getting IMs from your future self? What if death (or Death) wasn't all worms and horribleness, but something totally unexpected? I love posing these questions and seeing where they take me.
