Danny Johnson Hi, Susan..first I want to thank you for taking the time to read my novel, I very much appreciate it. I just finished a new novel called "Cotton" and is now in the editing process. There is a third in progress called (potentially) Teardrops of the Moon which I hope to finish this year. Sorry to be slow, but I'm trying:) There have been many suggestions about a sequel to The Last Road Home, and I have told folks I'm afraid all I could do was mess it up :) I will tell you that after Teardrops of the Moon, I just may come back to Junebug and Fancy and continue the story, but only if I can get a clear picture of how it would happen and where I could take them. I found Fancy to be the most wonderful character imaginable, with her willingness to fight for a better life. They were a joy to listen to as they told me their story. Again, I thank you for taking the time to send me this note, and hopefully the two new books coming will have a similar effect. I will keep you up to date. Best to you.
Danny Johnson The dark cloaked, ugly evilness of Halloween and twelve midgets of assorted foul smelling sizes stepped from the shadows on a rainy, wind-blown night just as the Chapel bells began to ring their midnight tolls. "On the death of your soul, can you tell us a two-sentence horror story?"
Danny Johnson Ahh, the desk is thick with great reads...One Good Mama Bone, The World's Largest Man, To Any Soldier, Still Fooling' 'Em, Looking For The Stranger just to name a few...recommend all of them highly...
Danny Johnson There's no such thing...we all get to a point where it just won't flow, and when it does, take a break, go walk in the woods...what I used to do was sit down and write flash fiction stories one after the other, not to publish but to just let words come...sit down and write the first word that comes to your mind, and go from there to make a very short story...I once wrote 36 of them while waiting for the flow to come back...
Danny Johnson To actually be able to produce something other folks will value enough to read...do it because you love it more than anything...
Danny Johnson Read the best books possible in your genre, work hard at your craft, and finally, don't be afraid to embarrass yourself...go to every open mic, conference, etc. that will let you in the door...never think you can't learn something from the folks who may be doing it better than you at this point.
Danny Johnson I'm working on a new novel with the working title of "Cotton". I'll let you imagine what it's about :)
Danny Johnson Very simple: from reading...I grew up in a pretty tough environment and my outlet was reading and dreaming about all the places the stories took me. It's a very old truth--you cannot write if you don't read.
Danny Johnson The characters came to me from that magical place in the Universe where they exist...They seem to come and ask me to write their story, and I'm happy to do my best to meet their expectations.
