I assume that it is expensive to get a narrator to read a book. If so, I couldn't commit to doing that unless and until the books are financially successful. I would do it myself, but at age 67 my voice has deteriorated to the point that talking for more than a few minutes is painful both to my larynx and to my listeners' ears. Maybe I'll look into asking one of my sons to do it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have no date in mind, except that I'm sure I won't let it go past the end of the year. I was having trouble making progress with the plot, so I've made an outline of the second and third books. This has made it easier to write. I'm sorry for how long this is taking.

I'm glad to know you have two more books in mind! Keep slogging away; I'm dying to read them!

Will do. I'll be updating the cover in a few weeks as well.

Obviously, the second book has gone past the end of the year. I'll finish it as soon as I can. The problem now is that the plot requires a lot of military stuff in the second book, and I'm struggling to keep it interesting for readers who don't love military action.

Reflecting on the magic systems in other fantasy novels, and trying to come up with a system that makes sense, and can co-exist with what we know of physics. Once I had thought of the magic system, I thought up characters who could make use of it, and a plot to fit them into.

Being able to share the thoughts bouncing around in your head with a wider audience, hopefully with people who are interested in them. Getting others' thoughts in response.

I go off and read something in the same genre. When I'm reading fantasy, for example, I can't help but think about my own plot and characters. And thinking inspires me to incorporate my thoughts in my novel.

1) Unless you're amazingly patient and persistent, don't bother trying to get an agent and traditional publisher.
2) Get your book edited by the most professional editor you can afford. I had several family members beat on The Summoned King, and it's a much better book for that treatment. If I could have afforded a professional editor, it would probably have been even better.
3) Find a subject matter expert. For example, my son, Matthew is an expert on weapons and armor, as well as a fantasy writer himself (Cataphract, available on Amazon). He helped a lot with everything military in The Summoned King.

I' m working on the overall plot of The Kalymbrian Chronicles, as well as the cover art for the other two books. I also have a political thriller in progress.

I'm often thinking about my characters and story while doing other things. Soon those thoughts reach critical mass, and I just have to incorporate them in the book.
