I had a dream a LONG time ago about a woman standing in a circular room, facing a huge set of wooden double doors. I sensed that there was so much waiting for her behind those doors but that she was terrified to move ahead. I felt the racing of her heart in this dream. I never saw her face but as I wrote it down (I always record my dreams) the story created itself really.

I am working on part 2 of Behind Castle Walls. I have 214 pages so far and am working things out in my head to get it just where I want it. Can I just say that I LOVE Captain Lachlan McGerry?!

Just write. Practice, practice, practice. I liked to think of beautiful scenes and write a description of them with the most clarity I know how. Create short stories. Most importantly, write for YOURSELF, not to please anyone else.

I think for me, the best thing about being a writer is creating a world of your own! You get to create the kind of place you would (or wouldn't ) want to be in. There have been times when my writer's voice was guiding me one direction but the emotional female that I am didn't want to go there. It turned out just right!
I also like to add bits of me into each character. For example, my peasant girl is a tough cookie, I created a woman like the one I would like to become. There is another character that is heavily influenced by some of the same feelings I can identify with. I may not be strong but my characters are and they are a part of me!

Oh boy. This is probably why my first book took me 8 years! When I got stuck and couldn't see where the story was going, I had to put it away for months! Usually over a year. That happened a lot. When I finally picked it up and read through it again, I was pleasantly surprised and was looking at it with a fresh mind. That made the entire difference!!
