The new story, The Undercover Policeman - Family Album, was originally going to be the second part of the previous book, Caribbean Blues, but both halves managed to grow in scope and in depth.
Either we had a huge book or two books. The dividing point was obvious and it was two books.

I normally have the complete story in my mind before I start to type.
When the going gets difficult .... I either:
Go to the other end of the story and write backwards from the end.
or
Change project for a while and write a short story .
Going to the other end reminds me of where the story is going and by putting detail I get to see what needs to come before the end. Giving me the building blocks for the bridging the gap.
Otherwise put the thing away, do something else then come back with a fresh mind, read what has made it onto the page and get the story moving again.

I have a couple of different stories in development and one of them (a non Rags to Riches story) is about half written.
There is a story I am slowly writing scenes and dialogue for which will be the follow on to Caribbean Blues. Bea keeps whispering bits of the story in my ear, but it tends to be when I'm doing other things! In addition there is at least one short story in Rags to Riches world that Rags has given me.
I expect there are tales from the rest of the extended Adiscombe/Johnston families to tell.
