L.M. Halloran Read. A lot. All the time, really. Read people, emotions, movement, books, articles, dictionaries, the news, and your Aunt Mildred's recipe book.

Watch and listen. Be a voyeur. Be shameless. Carry a journal and jot down anything that seems interesting. Voices, textures, conversations, expressions.

You never know what will trigger inspiration. Could be the cashier whose smile doesn't reach her eyes, or the smells and sounds as you walk into a bakery. Cultivate awareness and be mindful.
L.M. Halloran I'm not sure there's a "best" thing about being a writer. The hours are crap, the pay is unreliable, and you're required to put characters you love through the emotional wringer. Then there's the part where you offer your sweet, pink little story to the world. And the world is a cruel, dark place.

In all seriousness, though, writing is like the best deep tissue massage of your life--it hurts like hell, feels incredible at the same time, and you keep coming back for more. Storytelling is a passion that won't quit. If I didn't write down the stories in my head, I'd probably be in a padded room somewhere.
L.M. Halloran Naps. Definitely naps. Preferably outside. When I'm really stumped, I take a step back from whatever project I'm working on. I let the characters have their lives back for a while, allowing their voices to mature. When they have something to tell me, they do. Sometimes they don't, at which point I slap them with some sort of traumatic event. Because I'm evil like that.
