Will Wyckoff Oh my gosh! I just (tonight 1.25.23) found this question. I hope the person who asked finds my answer.
Therein lies the mystery. Have I handled my years...my time...my lifetime wisely? An entire year passed before I discovered this question. Why did that happen? Answer to this is easy: I have not been a regular here at Goodreads. Sometime life just gets in the way.
A story re: looking back and inspecting what I've failed to do might be good fodder for a story. Perhaps have a character in jail cell? on a death bed? Suddenly there's a chance at a "re-do!" Hmmmm...I wonder!
Will Wyckoff I don't recall ever formulating a list for any time of the year. As friends recommend titles, I read them.
Will Wyckoff Each night, Clyde X dreams of his three-year-old son's kidnapping. This morning he found his little boy's window forced open and his bed empty.
Will Wyckoff Send me back to Harper Lee's (in To Kill a Mockingbird) Maycomb, Alabama! I'd be shoulder to shoulder with Scout, Dill, and Jem at Tom Robinson's trial. To experience the heroic actions of Atticus Finch and listen to the stories about Boo Radley would be a dream come true. And then meet Boo Radley? Oh my!
Will Wyckoff 1) Until I listened to writer/singer Jimmy Buffet speak, I let "finding the time to write" be an obstacle. He was interviewed on television and was asked how he found time since he lives such a busy life style. As if he was speaking directly to me, he looked at the camera and smiled his famous Jimmy Buffet smile, shrugged his shoulders, and he spoke the words that melted away this problem for me: "I write one page a day."
2) At the other end of the writing rainbow, now that my books have been written, my greatest challenge is letting the world know they exist. Since I am a "self-published" writer, marketing is up to me and those have enjoyed my books. I am hoping they are helping to spread the word!
Will Wyckoff Thanks for your question! To be honest, I was not. Like most people I do value family and friends highly, so it appears it came about as a natural extension of the way I think, but it must have come about subconsciously.
Will Wyckoff Mary Lou, thanks for your question. You have roots in Hawley, PA? Small world! I have long enjoyed collecting pictures of Hawley that depict years gone by. As far as writing such a book and combining these photos with a written history, I have given it little thought. Let me think that one over!
Will Wyckoff When it happens I will tell you. What gets "in my way" ? Because I am still a self-published author, I work diligently on ways to let the world know my stories exists. If you can help spread the word, I can find more time to write! Thanks!
Will Wyckoff Knowing that something I composed brought pleasure to others.
Will Wyckoff Remember these always: 1) When you put a pencil or pen to paper or when you sit at your keyboard, you become God. You may make anything at all happen. 2) Have fun! When writing becomes a chore or a headache, walk away. 3) Be true to yourself, but be responsible. Try not to worry about what others will think of your work. My first-ever "story" landed me in the office of my principal when I was in fifth grade! I felt needed to make a point. I made my point. Posted my [one-page] story upon my classes "cloak room" wall, and then the sparks flew.
Will Wyckoff It's difficult to answer. I am considering publishing a collection of my short stories that I wrote when I was teaching and shared with my students. I might dust them off, tinker with them, and share them with the world.
Then there's the temptation to write sequels to my first two books. I've been asked to do that, so I might.
Will Wyckoff For as long as I can recall, I have enjoyed the telling of a good tale. To this day, I share stories that my grandfather shared with me. Now THAT MAN was a storyteller! (Perhaps that is why I gave my fictional U.S. President in BIRDS ON A WIRE my grandfather's name!) Throughout my school years, it was the teacher or the subjects that lent themselves to stories that I enjoyed most. Becoming a communications teacher was a natural fit for me. Then I started writing stories and using excerpts in my classroom to teach writing skills. It was years before a student said to me, "Mr. Wyckoff, did you write this? It sounds like you." Then I was hooked.
Will Wyckoff I taught in a middle school setting for 35 years in a terrific, small town in NE PA. The personalities of my characters and their respective conflicts stemmed from my teacher/student experiences.
