I usually wait it out but try to do other productive things like work on my outline and visualize where I'd like the story to go. Usually doing that will give me better direction as well as fuel to continue from where I last left off.

I thought about the various states of matter. I also was curious about where exactly light fits into the various states as it can be considered at least partially included in the four most known states liquid, gas, solid and plasma. From there I thought about the idea of sentient beings made of pure light. How cool would that be? How would we react to them and what the result would be? Twist some mythology, history and other things into it and eventually I had the thread to start my novel.

The best thing about being a writer is the journey you go on while writing. Seeing the story unfold and having the hope that the reader gets as much joy out it as I did. Just because I have an outline doesn't always mean things will happen the way I had originally planned.
