My coauthor and I had spent 20+ years in corporate jobs -- and three hours in the most soul-crushing meeting you can imagine. We escaped to a bar patio where we swapped workplace horror stories, and -- taking into account everything we had seen behind closed doors at companies -- we offhandedly joked "we should write a book." Once we sobered up, we actually wrote it.
