Jodi Paloni If you want to be a writer, read as much as can, and when you read something that moves you to want to read it again, do so. And write every day, even if it's for an hour, even if it's a letter to a friend who lives far away, or a page in your journal. And read about writing. The Paris Review has a wonderful interview series with writers who share about their writing life and also check out Catching Days , a blog about writing and writers who share a day in the life post once a month. Jodi Paloni I'm currently drafting a novel set on the coast of Maine during the summer of 1976, and jumping to 12 years later, and finally to present time. It's about a coming-of-age love that results in tragedy, followed by rebuilding, but more, it's about how the vulnerability of growing up post-60s, pre-80s, during the 70s –––which I believe was the decade of sorting ourselves out––– has made a far-reaching impact in one woman's life. As well, I continue to work on two new collection of short stories.
Jodi Paloni I read. I look around me. I make things with my hands–––collage, sculpture, soup. Mixed media journaling can get me going. Taking walks and taking pictures on my phone, image collecting, helps, too. I think activating some other part of the brain allows me the freedom to let what's going on inside bubble up without the pressure of the blank page or screen. But reading is the strongest way in for me. When I'm stuck, I open a book and within a few pages, I'm ready to put the book down and write.
Jodi Paloni This book started when I wrote one story about a fictional small town harvest fair in Vermont based on a scary event that happened in real life. The characters who gathered around a bakery table in the general store the morning after the event became real to me. I began telling each of their individual tales and how their lives were all connected. And while the original story never made it into the final version of the linked collection, the collection of stories grew, and still grows, as I work on a second volume of stories from Stark Run.
