Alice Vachss You can't prosecute difficult cases effectively unless you are an investigator at heart. So in some sense, every case starts out a mystery. The ones that haunt me start with chronic, evil predators whose known crimes are just the tip of the iceberg. Finding the unknown crimes, and then being able to do something about them ... that's an ongoing plot, where lives are literally at stake.
Alice Vachss What a fun question! I know most people don't think of him as a romance writer -- for good reason -- but I actually think my husband, Andrew Vachss, writes the most compelling love stories. My favorite evolves over the course of the Burke series between The Mole and Michelle. My favorite moment: when Michelle tries to explain feeling trapped in her body and the Mole responds, "I understand trapped."
Alice Vachss Showing readers an insider's view of sex crimes prosecution is my way to use the truth to accomplish change.
Alice Vachss Having a book published by Random House was one of the most exciting
things that ever happened to me. The book tours, the speeches, the
talk shows, the local news shows that interviewed me about late-breaking
crime stories, the major publications that asked me to write articles or
opinion pieces – all of it not only made me proud, it gave me a voice.

I think those days of publishing are gone. I will always keep in my
heart the book-loving sales reps who hand-sold “Sex Crimes” to stores
because they believed in what it had to say, and some brave holdout
independent bookstore owners who seem motivated by the same belief in
their work that I am in mine.

But I don’t believe in their industry. For me, e-books are more
fundamentally accessible to authors and readers alike. I decided to use
the sequel to Sex Crimes–which is the only other book I have in me–to
launch my own, small nonfiction e-book publishing house dedicated to non-fiction solutions to violence. Since every single step I’ve taken to accomplish that goal came with its own steep learning curve, I’ve called the house Pay What It Costs Publishing, LLC.
