The best way to teach yourself to write is to write. I've taken so many classes and courses over the years, and while I'll always be someone who craves knowledge and loves studying, I think that the best way to actually learn the craft of writing is to do it. Even if it means you do it again and again and again until it clicks. I promise that you're not alone in the process. You're not the only one who feels like it might take forever to get right--I'm right there with you! So I wish everyone who's in the middle of a story right now the best of luck. And there are so many middles when it comes to publishing. You can be in the middle of waiting to hear back from an agent. Or in the middle of revisions. Or in the middle of waiting to hear from a publisher. It's all part of the story of becoming a writer, so to speak, if you can forgive that metaphor!

Above all, my favorite thing is hearing from readers who connected to my books and who felt inspired by them. There's nothing better than knowing that your story made someone think about life differently, or made them fall in love with reading again. And my other favorite thing about being an author is the writing community as a whole. Meeting or connecting with other authors and booksellers and reviewers, and just lovers of books in general. Many thanks to all of you!

I'm currently working on a co-written YA that's a twist on the dark academia/ boarding school genre. Just like NO BEAUTIES OR MONSTERS, my WIP has a setting that is remote, atmospheric, and full of both anticipated and unexpected threats.

California's Mojave Desert -- which is full of legends and lore -- was my inspiration for NO BEAUTIES OR MONSTERS. I went on a road trip through Death Valley when I first moved to California, and after doing more research on the area, I knew it had to be the setting for my next novel. I'm a very place-driven writer, so if a place -- like a vast, glinting desert or a dense, creepy woods -- gives off a certain mood or feeling, usually a story starts to follow!
