It was an event that took place years ago, when I was homeschooling my then young son and daughter, and it involved the dark, cavernous basement of our favorite coffeeshop. Someone, or something, had taken up residence in that basement, and it became a genuine mystery for the management at the coffeeshop, as well as for me and my kids. When I wrote my first novel for middle school-grade readers, Walking Distance, that mystery became the centerpiece of it. :)

I'm currently working on three middle school-grade books, one to match each of my three likeliest moods: stormy, partly cloudy, sunny. So I always have something to work on no matter my internal weather!

The idea for DO OVER grew out of a conversation I had with a friend. This was two, two and a half years ago. Jim and I were sitting across from each other in our then-favorite coffeeshop, and he was telling me about this book he'd read as a child that had impressed him mightily. At one point he wondered aloud if the structure of that book had ever been duplicated by a modern writer, and I thought: Hmm.
