I finally plunged my hand into the garbage disposal, determined to find out why it wouldn't run with the switch up.

I'm very ADD so writer's block is a frequent thing; in my case, it usually means I lost the narrative thread. Notes often help, but usually I take a break from the stalled story or sometimes from writing altogether, especially if stress is a factor.

A variety of projects. I'm trying to balance short stories against a few novels in progress. One project involves more merfolk stories for my own anthology someday, as well as a post-apocalyptic novel set in the same world.
Themes I'm exploring include teleportation, future manufacturing, space travel, asteroid mining, climate change and contagion, to name the big ones.

Usually it's something really offbeat that catches my attention, primarily from science news sources. Lately twitter provides the bulk of my ideas! But in general, getting out and seeing new places and things motivates me the most. A significant change of environment really does the trick!

I've always been fascinated with the idea of merfolk as far back as I can remember. I was inspired to write "The Dolphin Riders" by a combination of sources: a faux documentary about merfolk, the growing threat of climate change, and the discovery years ago of skeletons with elongated skulls on Malta. In 2015 these elements all came together for me, and the story wrote itself.
