Matt Wade Inspiration tends to strike when I either first get an idea or figure out the next part of a story. I have to be in a good mood, awake and alert.
Matt Wade Thanks for reading! I'm still waiting on the cover art that I commissioned for my next novel, but I hope to receive it soon. Ideally, then, I plan on publishing the book by the end of the year.
Matt Wade If I could travel to any fictional book world, I would go to Lyra Belacqua's Oxford/Jordan college, and I would probably study dust. I'm a biologist as well as a writer, so this would satisfy both creative urges.
Matt Wade I don't have an organized list, but I'd like to read Etched in Bone (by Anne Bishop), Regenesis (by C.J. Cherryh), and American Pastoral (by Phillip Roth), among others.
Matt Wade How I deal with writer's block depends on the situation. If I'm trying to start a novel, I clear my mind and try to picture where my character might be and what he or she might be thinking. If I'm picking up where I left off, I review what I recently wrote and worm my way back into the character's headspace. Lastly, if I'm stuck in the middle of a writing session, I quickly think about how a character might respond to a particular action or line of dialogue. Most importantly, I keep in mind that I can always go back later and edit the text. The backspace (or delete) button is a writer's best friend!
Matt Wade I'm currently writing a novel called The Burgeoning Heart of Bambi Bazooms. It's about a Cartoon burlesque dancer who has just turned fifty years old, and she has begun to wonder if there's more out there, beyond her neighborhood and her role in life. When she meets a human named Steve Warner, she begins to discover that the answer is yes, but that relationship is only the beginning. I've just arrived at the "something more", so I have much more to write, but I hope you all enjoy reading the finished product!
Matt Wade I feel that the best thing about being a writer is sharing my thoughts and baring my soul without necessarily revealing personal information. The writing provides insight into my mind, and the readers can be content that they get to know me a little bit better. I'm a private person, so this is a good compromise.
Matt Wade My most recent book (Green Alert) is a sequel to Super Cute. After I finished writing that first book, I realized that I had developed an affinity for Shelby Davenport, one of the supporting characters. I quickly knew that I wanted Shelby to be the protagonist for the sequel, because I wanted to further explore her personality and history. I also wanted to explore more of the Mystic Realms and their inhabitants, so I needed a character-driven plot that would allow me to do so. Once I started thinking about the mechanics of the Realms' barriers, I soon arrived at that new plot, and the ball was rolling.
Matt Wade Write what you're most passionate about, and that passion will show on the page. Remember, you're not only writing for your readers, you're writing for yourself, too. Plus, if you really care about what you're writing, it will come easy to you.
