Adam Howard I try to believe what Stephen King says in his book "On Writing,"
"Inspiration is for amateurs."
or was that Hugh Grant in "Music and Lyrics?"
I don't know but I quote it to myself everyday. I have a hard time sitting down to write. When I do, I have to tell myself that the first draft doesn't have to be perfect, it only has to be written. Once I start writing, inspiration starts to flow. Though, at the moment, it feels like my stream of thought is at a trickle, I blame that on laziness, not a muse or writer's block.
Adam Howard The fame and fortune are great but I'm gonna have to go with all the beautiful women fawning over my work.
Adam Howard Sit down and force out at least a little bit of writing everyday. Starting the day's writing is the hardest part for me. Be like Nike and just do it.
Adam Howard I have several projects running at the moment. I have a non-fiction book full of information and personal accounts of working terriers in the Pacific Northwest. I wrote it years ago and it has merely been waiting to be published.
As an author, I am often advised to stick to "my brand" of stories. While this may be great advice for building a readership and making a few more dollars, it is an uninspiring way to go about storytelling for me. I don't want to look back on my life after having written hundreds of books and like Louis L'amore, wish that I had written more science fiction rather than westerns.
My current brainchild is a novella about two young lovers who lived during the time of the building of King Solomon's Temple. It is based off of several biblical stories but focuses most directly on the characters of the Song of Solomon and Hiram Abiff, the moral exemplar of the Freemasons. As you can tell, this is nothing like my first two books which are steeped in the milieu of hunting and hound culture.
I have outlines for the next books in the "GRIT" series. I plan to write two more stories in that vein. Not to mention some outlines for a fun young adult fantasy fiction. I don't need to go that far into the future of describing what I am working on.
Adam Howard I love a well written book. The process of writing itself is not that enjoyable to me, but I love to see the finished product of a good story. A good story excites me. Luckily, I am always imagining up or hearing something that inspires me. I want others to be inspired with the same excitement that I have been. The best way I can do that is by being the storyteller that brings these imaginings to other people.
Adam Howard My childhood friends were always wanting to get together with a tape recorder and tell our adventures with each other. We lived a lifestyle that is fading and wanted to capture the culture we experienced together. I decided a fictional book would allow more leeway with describing the different types of characters I have encountered in my life. It would be difficult to sit a hillbilly of the Oregon Hills down and get them to tell stories into a recording device but I feel it is worthwhile to tell their tales as well as my own. My novel "GRIT" allowed me to more thoroughly explore the personalities, lives and stories of both the tame and wilder people I have met. I'm far from done sharing.
