Leslie Stark I wouldn't say it was hard, but since the illustrations were such a critical part of the project, I did spend a lot of time searching and looking at portfolios. I had a very specific look in mind for the artwork, and a budget to work within. I found Erin Beachy on Elance.com (which is now called Upwork). I loved her work, and she had previous experience doing children's book illustrations. It was a fun collaboration. Erin lives in Chicago, so we used Skype and email a lot. I sent her a lot of pictures of Madison Park for reference, and pictures and video clips of Bella.
Leslie Stark I wanted to do something as a tribute to my dog Bella. Her curiosity and personality were perfect for an adventure story, and I thought kids would enjoy it. As I started writing, new ideas came up, and it evolved from there.
