The real world is cruel to him—given that he's an odd kid—but it’s even harder for him (and the reader) to discern what is real in his world, as he's tortured by vivid hallucinations

As a kid, I was fascinated by the apparent conflict between science and spirituality. When I got older, I read several articles in Discover Magazine and Scientific American about time travel and multi-world theories and, over time, a story that reconciled the conflict emerged.
