I find that if I'm having a hard time with creative output, I need some creative input to get me thinking again. So if I can't write, I read, or watch, or play something new, and try to think in detail about whatever it is I'm experiencing, to learn from how it makes me feel.

Being able to put into words a world and a set of characters I've come to care about in my head.

The Digitesque series is a slow build of multiple sources. There was a piece of music that inspired the first vision. After that, a few science-fantasy game settings made me think a lot about the intersections of science-fiction and fantasy. I started thinking about what it was I looked for in science-fantasy media, and in particular, why do I like Star Wars so much anyway?
As I started writing, I was inspired by Adrian Tchaikovsky's characters Che and Seda, from his Shadows of the Apt series, and wanted to explore that kind of dynamic again - two "chosen one" women inextricably linked, but with very different backgrounds and potentially opposing goals. And that's just the high-level stuff - Digitesque is really a collection of small thoughts and responses to the sci-fi and fantasy I've been exposed to, hopefully brought together in a cohesive whole.

I've always loved writing in general, but inspiration does wax and wane. Music is a huge factor - intricate, uplifting, or complex melodies really get me going. Responding to media I've enjoyed and engaged with is another big one - I like to think of what I write as a response to the things I read, watch, or play.

I'm currently editing the sequel to Zeroth Law, as well as putting together a second series of short stories to follow up Our Cursed Gifts!
