M.B. Gibson While looking for reasons my characters might emigrate from Ireland to America, I found an amazing story from 18th century Tipperary. I don't want to tell too much about the story itself, but it has evolved into my current novel followed by my work in progress. I get most of my ideas from historical events that rouse my curiosity.
M.B. Gibson My inspiration comes from so many places, I cannot list them all. I hear something on the radio, read about an event in books or online, go to conferences and workshops, read inspirational books on writing (I have an ungodly number of them), or talk to fellow writers, to name a few.
M.B. Gibson I am writing the sequel to my 18th century historical novel, Aroon. The story takes place fifteen years later and is called 'Harps Upon the Willows.' Look for it at the end of the year.
M.B. Gibson My best advice is to find a group of like-minded writers with whom to share your work while critiquing theirs. They can be those who write in your genre or a variety of genres; both work well. I have worked with on-line groups and in person. Anytime I've interacted, I've grown as a writer. I thank God for my critique partners!
M.B. Gibson Sometimes I get stuck on a character's response to the situation I've placed him in. At time like those, I open a new file and write what I call a 'rant.' I allow that character to blast out how he feels. It usually goes for half to a full page. Once finished, I not only get some idea where the character should go, but get some good lines at the same time."
M.B. Gibson Eric, I'm afraid not. I once wrote a short story that was a memory from seventh grade, but that's generally not my genre. There are good books out there to help with this process. I suggest you Google 'how-to books on writing memoir'. Best of luck!
