Well I studied my family history and found that my Great Grandfather died at 39, having run a successful business as a Cutler in Norwich, leaving a widow and four children under ten. His brother went to Australia in 1870 on the SS Great Britain, but why he left is a mystery. Did he come back for the funeral in the family plot in London? Did the brothers fall out?

Hi Sharon,
Pen Pals is my first novel, having initially been written as a play. I undertook the Hull Truck Playwrite programme and Pen Pals was the result. I'm from Coventry originally, so writing about the strike torn seventies came rather easy for me. I based it in Yorkshire because I now live there, and a northern mill town added atmosphere. Good luck in the giveaway. Goodreads draw the winners, but let me know whether your successful or not. Regards Martin Gore - Author

Walk away and forget things for a while. Do some descriptive work on characters and places to kick start the ideas.

That the whole world and everything you experience is a potential book, and that you are doing something others can only aspire to do.

I guess to write from your own experience, to learn from others work, and NEVER tell a story, ALWAYS show it through the lens of your characters.

I'm currently writing a pantomime version of Beauty and the Beast for my home group in Walkington for performance in December.
I'm also writing my next novel, The Road to Cromer Pier, for publication in time for Christmas.

I've always loved story telling, even as a child. I've written seven pantomimes and a couple of plays, but find the limits on numbers of characters restricting. I find writing takes me to another place, and I can lose myself completely, then suddenly almost wake up.

I originally wrote Pen Pals as a play, and converted it to a novel when I decided to retire. I was brought up in the seventies, and recall the strike torn era where our manufacturing base was destroyed by over powerful trade unions and weak management. "Them and us" epitomised the attitudes of the respective sides. In my view we shouldn't forget how we became the low wage economy with a wider social divide. Pen Pals is a heart warming family story, but tells a tale of where things went wrong.
