Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Richard T. Ryan I really never discuss the ideas in a book while I am writing -- not with anyone.

How do you get inspired to write?
Richard T. Ryan I had to find out if I was good enough. I thought I might be, but if you don't try, you will never know. My wife was also a major source of encouragement.

Richard T. Ryan A second Sherlock Holmes adventure.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Richard T. Ryan Don't give up. I was a newspaper columnist for 35 years before I tried my hand at a novel. Believe in yourself. It's a lonely business, but you can do it.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Richard T. Ryan There's a certain personal satisfaction that comes from solving the problems presented by a mystery. I also like the self-discipline it affords me. And I really enjoy doing the research.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Richard T. Ryan I just keep writing. Even if it's nonsense, there might be something in there that I can salvage.
