We are remodeling an old Victorian home when we discover a large amount of money hidden in a wooden box between two interior walls—walls that don’t appear on the original blueprint. The questions press in immediately: Where does the money come from? Who hid it there, and why? The box is said to be from the early 1900s, so I trace the original family. They stay in the city for a few years, then vanish. I check vital statistics but can’t find a death certificate for any of them anywhere. So where do they go? And why don’t they take the money with them?
