I kept running into the name Zilphia Horton when I was researching anything related to freedom songs, for my day job as a folk music reporter. Women don't usually figure in folk music scholarship for that era, so I finally looked her up and found this photo of a young woman playing accordion in a dining room. I thought, "Who plays accordion in the dining room?" So I dug further. I learned that she had been friends with and influenced people like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, she'd worked with Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Septima Clark. She died young from accidentally drinking poison. And nothing else had ever been written about her. There were too many roads into this story. I had to follow it.
