D.F. Bailey I love writing fiction — crime-based social realism, in particular — especially when the story I'm writing is linked to true events of some kind.

The key character in my first novel, Fire Eyes, was inspired by a patient I met when I worked on a psychiatric children's ward. The plot for that novel drew heavily on the "Squamish Five," an urban guerilla terrorist group active in the early 1980s. By the way, Fire Eyes was a W. H. Smith First Novel Award finalist.

The inspiration for Bone Maker, the first book in my new crime trilogy, emerged from two key sources. First, the case of a black bear devouring a convicted murderer in the wilderness, and second, the theft of $450,000,000 in Bitcoin from the Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange in Japan. As far as I know, this is the largest non-military robbery of all time. To date this crime has not been solved. (You can find links to the actual events on my web site: http://www.dfbailey.com/TrueEvents.html)

PS: on July 4, Bone Maker was nominated for a Whistler Independent Book Award.
D.F. Bailey I'm currently writing Death's Shadows, the 4th novel in my crime series which begins with Bone Maker (you can get it for free on Amazon.com). It usually takes about a year for me to complete a novel which means this book should be ready for readers early next year (2017). Fingers crossed!
D.F. Bailey If you are going to write long-form fiction or nonfiction, you have to develop a writing discipline that will carry you through months (or more likely, years) of creative solitude. It's both exhilarating and exhausting — but well worth the sacrifice you have to make. Begin by committing yourself to writing for 30 minutes. The next day, read over what you wrote the day before — polishing unwieldy phrases and diction as you go — then carry your characters into the next scene for another 30 minute session. Write, polish, repeat. After you've established this discipline for a month or two, increase your writing sessions by 30 minute increments until you find your natural tempo.
