Somehow, I never saw this question before-sorry about that! The events just really struck me as a story about young people, many of them barely beyond the intended YA audience. I’d already been focused on writing for young people and children, and it seemed like a story kids today should know. So many of the struggles of the time are still with us in some form-racism, classism, sexism, small town v. university, etc. The lens may shift, but the fundamental issues remain. I really wanted kids today to be able to connect with that history, which in some ways was so long ago but which still has so many reverberations, especially in how we protest and think of protest today. Thanks for the question!

This book came out of something I saw on television about the Kent State shootings. I was immediately drawn to the story as one that is often times a small blurb in our history books, despite the fact that the shootings played such a crucial role in turning the tide of sentiment against the Vietnam War.

I'm currently working on several projects including a YA fantasy duology (book one is almost complete), a contemporary realism novel, and two middle grade novels. But I also write poetry, short stories, and nonfiction.

I see almost everything as a story. I think there are stories all around us just waiting for us to find them.

I'll go back and read and edit earlier parts and let the problems that are keeping me stuck germinate or impose a deadline. Even if you feel you are writing something worthless, you will have something on the page to work with.
