To jump on the back of a previous answer, from a photo. The original idea was a follow-up to the previous book and based on characters from that. Once I saw the photo, I knew it would be perfect and my story branched out from there.

This will probably sound strange to my fellow authors, but I am inspired by photos. That is a great prompt for me. Most of my books came from seeing a single photo that inspires me. That is why I almost always have my cover ready long before the book is completed.

I read a book in my genre or watch a movie. Lately, I've been experimenting with AI software. I will enter the passage where I'm stuck and see where the software goes with it. I don't usually use the same words or thoughts, but I often get a nudge on where to go next.
