Barbara Strickland I see things, hear things and they strike a learning chord. It makes me want to examine closer by creating characters to see and hear from a safer distance. Distance gives perspective. The writing down gives me perspective and I hope in this way my characters give insight into situations we all face.
With blogging and my poetry it is more about commenting on those same things as myself hoping others will comment back so I increase my knowledge.
Sounds confusing but the truth is I don't know how not to write.
Barbara Strickland Absolutely. However, each step you master and even then there are no guarantees your work will be read, is an incredible learning experience in what we can do when we try.
Barbara Strickland Because my family is Italian I would probably enter my own fictional world. I often miss the warmth and laughter and family overload that is being Italian. I would bask in all of that and absorb the lilt of the language and the divine aroma of the food.
However in saying that I have quite a few favourite authors and I would enter their world simply because of the incredible men they create lol.
Barbara Strickland Many years ago I went to Morocco and did the whole Casablanca thing. That in itself is a story but not the mystery. This part of Africa is colourful, exciting and very different and though I originally had doubts, the experience turned out to be one of the best in my travelling life, and surprisingly safe.
One night though, the second last of our week there, my group and I went out for dinner. We decided as a group which included males (five in all), to go for a walk before heading back to our hotel and walk off what had been a veritable feast. One minute there were lots of people surrounding us and then the numbers got fewer and fewer. It was still very well lit, and it was a pleasant enough area, quite pretty really so we weren't at all worried. I was laughing at something someone had said when I got a feeling that actually froze me to the spot. I felt the colour leave my face. My stomach went queasy and it was all I could do, to get words out. I told my friends we had to go home there and then, that very moment. The strange thing was no-one argued. It was something about the way I looked that made them do exactly what I said. We turned and retraced our steps back to the restaurant and went back to the hotel.
To this day I wonder what would have happened if we had continued. A plot or not, that is an interesting question. I'm not sure I want the answer, even an imaginary one.
Barbara Strickland Get cranky, whinge and then go find something positive to do. I find something I can do usually gives me the edge I need.
Barbara Strickland The possibility that you will give someone a place to escape the world even for a short time.
Barbara Strickland Don't be afraid to try. Find groups to support you, or start your own (we did, its called Wordwic3d) and attend workshops. Read, read and read and then review the books. You would be amazed at how much that helps your own writing. Read, read and read books, blogs, and articles that offer advice. This helps centre your work.
My favourite is blogging. It gave me courage and was the first part of my website.
Barbara Strickland Currently I am waiting for my cover to my first novel in my Unexpected Series. It is a romance with plenty of spice and a hero to drool over. I am already at work on Book 2 and although the books (5 in all) will stand alone the couple from the first book will feature throughout the series. I will keep you posted about the release date.
Barbara Strickland Honestly by just about everything around me but mostly by the pleasure other authors have brought to my life.
Barbara Strickland Mine is just one story in amongst others in the anthology. Watching what people go through started me thinking about how people deal with things and so I started writing as someone watching on the outside.
