I recently found an old penny from 1939 in my local cemetery. It instantly set my creative cogs whirring and a very clear timeslip MG story came to mind.

From children's fiction it will have to be Mr and Mrs Twit. They made me laugh as a child and they make me laugh and cringe now with their disgustingness! I do love Mr and Mrs Bevin in my own book because they are based on people very close to me ... but I couldn't possibly say who!

Absolutely yes. I have had an equal amount of boys and girls tell me that they've enjoyed the book. I think magic appeals to all children, be it a witch or a wizard. There's a lot of humour in the book too which has certainly appealed to the boys. My eldest son is a reluctant reader and always complains that books are too long. I think the Dragonfly series, which Grace-Ella is a part of, are the perfect length for the slightly reluctant reader.

The name Grace-Ella came to me as I drove to work one morning. I knew that she was just an ordinary little girl but that she would have a secret. Once I knew that this secret would be that she was a witch, Mr Whiskins came to life. The story grew from there. I loved every second of writing it. It's the kind of story I would have loved as a child. I loved anything magical - folktales, Enid Blyton's books, anything to do with fairies. All these stories that I devoured as a child influence my stories.

I was driving to work and the name Grace-Ella whooshed into my mind and I had to execute a perfect emergency stop and swing into a lay-by to frantically scribble in my notebook. I knew that she was just an ordinary girl with a secret ... once Mr Whiskins came along to reveal the secret the story just flowed.

It's that I get to write! That simple! That's when I'm happy; when my imagination takes over and time forgets to tick and I'm lost in a world of words.

It's been said countless times, but just write. Make the time, no matter how hectic life is. I spent so long saying 'One day I'm going to write a book', without actually getting on and doing it. When I finally sat down to do it, I woke up at 4.30am every week day and wrote for two hours before facing real life. I have learnt that tomorrow can be cruelly snatched away so just do it. If you want to be a writer ... write.

I am currently writing the second 'Grace-Ella' book, all about Witch Camp. There will be lots of magical mayhem, broken rules and broomstick battles. It's so wonderful to be able to write a second book with the same characters because I am nowhere near ready to say goodbye to Grace-Ella and Mr Whiskins.
