It depends on which illness or disorder inspired it. Like how some poems were written to come clean or speak up, some to prevent danger, some to cope, and some to document my symptoms.

My mental illnesses. After three years of somehow keeping severe mental illnesses secret, I found that writing about it was easier than coming clean verbally. My aunt did the same when she was about my age, and I feel like that was, subconsciously, part of my decision to write poetry.
