Really, there's nothing like letting the rush of the creative process take you away. I often say time becomes liquid, because the process is transporting. There are certainly mountain-peak moments--sending your completed manuscript to your publisher, seeing your book come out on Amazon, and holding a paperback version in your hand the first time all rise to the top. The reward for writing is the time spent writing. Golden.

There is something new to learn around every curve. Keep open to expansion of your knowledge base. Pace yourself when trying new approaches or extending your boundaries. Train yourself to write fluently and often. When you finish one project, begin creatively shaping the next one in your mind's eye. Seek out other writers and fellowship.

We suffered a pretty bad natural disaster in western Kansas where our family ranches on the shortgrass prairie. I'm writing that into a romance while trying to be true to the hardships faced and the courage shown by the local ranchers who lost nearly everything. The theme is resiliency.

I typically have a keen interest or idea for the opening scene that just won't go away until it gets written down.

When the publisher announced a novella collection for the 20th anniversary of the passing of John Denver, I jumped at the chance to write something based on his ode to Jacques Cousteau in the song "Calypso." I ended up with an advanced degree in marine biology and met Cousteau's son when he visited our campus. I threw in a little coastal research to keep the story-line authentic and gave the heroine my cluttered office! Going back to school where I first started writing was too fun! The premise in "Calypso Reimagined" is an oceanographer who falls out of love with the ocean!
