I try to keep forward momentum going as much as possible. I don't like ending a writing session at the end of a major scene since it's difficult to get start again. I like being able to sit down and knowing exactly what the next words will be.

To me, Toronto is a rich source of material.
It has (or at least used to have) the nickname "Toronto the Good" yet there are no shortages of horrific crimes committed there. There are racial tensions, a police department with a history of violence, political demonstrations, shootings on the street, a huge discrepancy between the rich and poor (who often live a block apart), drug issues and prostitutes walking the streets. It is also the largest city in Canada and thus a big economic driver.
So looking at that brief list outlined above, you can see how a crime writer like myself could easily come up with storylines that my PI Derek Lasker would get embroiled in. It makes me look forward to future books!

This is an interesting story.
I worked in the film business for many years, and on one of my last shows (a mini-series for cable TV) we shot in some of the nastier areas of Toronto. I snapped pictures of some of the more interesting locations and people that I ran into. I thought my writing challenge would be to use these pictures as fodder for a book.
They became "Vicious Dogs".

Not sure... I've always written.

1. The sequel to "Vicious Dogs" tentatively called "Superstring Theory".
2. A book about jazz that is meant to serve as a guide for new listeners, as well as those who already listen to jazz but might be looking to expand their knowledge and discover some new music.

I mentioned this above: allow yourself to write a lousy first draft. Good writing means re-writing. Don't put pressure on yourself.

It's important to get words down on the page. Let yourself write a lousy first draft: that will keep the pressure off of you. Writing a paragraph is better than writing nothing at all.
