My current book idea builds on the previous book. I did speak with a few reviewers of Hood about the next idea, and got fired up by the appetite for book No. 2. Now I just need to buckle down on it and get to work.

When I get positive feedback from my regular, loyal readers, I feed off that energy and get motivated to dig into the reporting and writing.

Develop a zone of expertise in something. Politics, science, business -- it doesn't matter. It's important to develop a specialty in a domain. Then continually read good writers to hone the writing craft.

I'm sketching out a new book idea on DNA sequencing from the past 10-15 years, which will build on the Hood book in a way. Not a biography, but more of an ensemble drama.

Getting up from the desk and getting a drink of water, or some fresh air, often will do the trick. I learned a few years ago that getting some exercise in the middle of the day helps provide me more energy for later in the afternoon.
