Have you ever considered a mystery set in a law firm in Seattle? There are a lot of good characters there...

Andrew Diamond I hadn't thought of it, but much of my next book is set in Seattle. That one should be out later this summer. It features Freddy Ferguson, from Gate 76.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Andrew Diamond When I first rode my bike to work here in Charlottesville several years ago, I passed a little street called Warren Lane, and I thought, "That's the title of my first book." I had no idea what the book would be about, and several years passed before I started writing it.

As to where the story came from, I have no idea. It wasn't something I pondered over. It came fully formed, all at once, like Athena, and the challenge was just being able to type fast enough to get it all down.

How do you get inspired to write?

Andrew Diamond I just let my mind wander. It never stops. My wife asks me why I don't like having the TV or the radio on. I tell her it's because I have 6 or 7 movies playing in my head 24/7, and adding one more into the mix is just too much.

Writing is just pulling a thread from that endless stream of consciousness, setting it down in words, and then taking some time to flesh it all out so the reader can see it as fully as I see it.

What are you currently working on?

Andrew Diamond Two novels and a biography. One novel is comic and satirical. The other is a dark mystery. The first draft of the satirical novel is done, but it needs a lot of work. I work on the mystery now and then, when I'm inspired.

I'm also working on a biography of a forgotten but fascinating character in American history. And I'm working on two big software projects. That's a lot. I don't have enough time to do it all.
