Bill Higgins At one point during my CIA career, I worked in a position similar to that of the job held by Dave Reed, the protagonist in Modify Destiny. While working in an office that was a precursor to today’s Message Watch Office, I would occasionally come across classified messages concerning foreign military forces’ reactions to unidentified flying objects detected in restricted airspace. Some of those messages are now available to the public thanks to passage of the Freedom of Information Act.
Bill Higgins I often get my best ideas while taking a shower. I bathe only once a week, so I don't get many good ideas (kidding!). Really, my best ideas usually pop into my head when I’m doing something other than writing.
Bill Higgins I'm kicking around ideas for a sequel to Modify Destiny. Frankly, I'm going to wait and see how Modify Destiny sells before I put much effort into a sequel. I might also write a story based on my mother's childhood while she grew up during the Great Depression. Better yet, I might somehow merge my mother's story into a Modify Destiny sequel. Hmm.
Bill Higgins Don't take the self-publishing route unless your book is well edited, well written, and unique enough to stand out from the crowd. Also, you need to be willing to spend a limited amount of money on marketing. Remember what the wise man said: “The best book ever written won't sell if only a few people know of its existence.”
Bill Higgins The best thing about being a writer is the ability to convert my scattered, weird thoughts into something that some people find entertaining.
Bill Higgins I wait until I have an idea before I start writing. I know that some authors force themselves to write a specific number of pages every day. Not me. I've learned that forcing myself to do anything seldom produces good results.
