The ability to write the script and control the ending. Real life is so unpredictable it can be chaos sometimes. When it's your own piece of work you get to decide the outcomes for your characters - good and bad.

Read as much as you can and when you are not reading, write. Write anything. Letters, diaries, blogs, essays, short stories, the opening of your novel (I've got lots of those), exciting scenes, anything at all. I started by writing non-fiction articles and then a non-fiction book related to my full-time employment. Its all good practice and teaches you how to write economically. Also, get yourself a good grammar guide and study it. It will save you so much time down the line when you start to edit.
