I'd been watching a lot of cult documentaries and learning about North Korea. I wondered about the kids who grow up in these places, knowing nothing else and having no idea that any of it is strange. That's how To Keep Us In came to be.

Most of my inspirations come from interesting characters I encounter in books or movies. I notice quirks about the characters and imagine how I would write them differently and what kind of situations I would put them in... So, I guess that's just called fan fiction.

Writer's block always comes to me when I am feeling anxious. This is a problem because I have social anxiety, which has just become way worse since the pandemic started. When I can't write, I have to force myself to step away from the computer and go take care of myself. I do things that I enjoy that have nothing to do with stories. Reading or watching TV just remind me that I am not creating a story. I do yoga, take a bath, paint my nails, maybe do a little online shopping - whatever it takes to clear my mind and relax. Once I am feeling more like myself, I can write again.
