The idea for the book I'll be working on later this year came from a writing exercise we did in my local writing group. We were handed a picture and told to write something about it. Usually, these types of prompts don't work for me, but this one sent wheels spinning.

Observation, mostly. I watch and listen to the people around me. I ask questions about why people make the decisions they do, how the shape of the world around them guides their path. And then I daydream--which is great except when I lose the thread of a conversation as a result.
If the question here is how do I make myself sit down and get words on the page...I just do? I have to treat it like a job, and you don't get to just do your job when you feel like it.

I'm working on a couple of short pieces at the moment, but I plan to start my next novel (which I'm thinking of as NEXT TO NORMAL meets STARFISH) later this year.

Sit down and do the work. The book's not going to write itself. Don't worry about it not being good enough. You can fix bad writing. You can't fix writing that was never done.

I get to explore and express things that I don't get to show in my daily life. I get to have adventures that are out of reach for the real me. I get to indulge some of the worst parts of my personality without hurting the people around me. I get to let the best parts of me fly as high as they can. Writing lets me be myself to the fullest extent.

Honestly, most of the time I just try to write through it. Sometimes shaking up my process a little helps. If I'm stuck staring at a blank page on the computer, I might try putting pen to paper for a while. When that doesn't work, I step away and do something else for a little while. Sometimes that lets me come back with fresh eyes.
