Kate - I'm a marine ecologist who has turned to mysteries to engage readers in climate change science and issues - in the context of a compelling story with characters people relate to. The first book in my series ("The Maine Oceanography Mysteries") is "Cold Blood, Hot Sea" if you want to check it out on Amazon. Do you know any other environmental mystery writers? Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?
Kate Brandes I'm drawn to the relationship in Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer between old, conservative Garnett Walker, who dreams of reviving the American chestnut, and his neighbor Nannie Rawley, the headstrong owner of an organic orchard. They aren't a couple in the traditional sense. But I love the contention between them as they search for common ground.

In your book The Promise of Pierson Orchard, you write from the point of view of several different characters. Whose scenes did you enjoy writing the most?
Kate Brandes Hi Sandi! Great question:) Jack's scenes and voice came most easily to me and he was the most fun to write. For whatever reason, I often tend to prefer writing in a male voice. This makes it interesting since I write women's fiction:)

What are you currently working on?
Kate Brandes I'm beginning a new novel on beliefs and the stories we tell ourselves to justify our lives. It's set in a small town, at the confluence of past and present.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Kate Brandes The hardest part for me is starting. That takes the greatest leap of faith. If you can get something down on paper, then you've begun and it gets easier and more interesting from there.
