I was actually doing research to write a play set in the Hudson Valley in the 1800s. I bought a book about the history of that region, and I came across a brief paragraph about Pollepel Island and its supposedly haunted history. "Haunted?" I thought. "I can work with that." Well, the more I learned about the island's real history as opposed to its supernatural history, the more I fell in love with the place. It all sort of evolved over time from there.
