Jill Orr Hi Connie, I'm so glad you received the book! To answer your question, I do have a real-life pet, a mini-dachshund named Bubblicious. So she doesn't have a lot in common with Coltrane (though we always joke that she's never looked in a mirror so she probably thinks she is as big as a German Shepherd!). Bubbles is my constant companion, always burrowed underneath the blanket right by my side as I write!
Jill Orr It's the same haunting question every day... "Where did I put my keys?" (Maybe not quite enough to sustain a whole book though, unless I wrote it Groundhog Day style!)
Jill Orr Every single published writer I know (myself included) worked for a long time before they found success. It’s the rare writer who hits it out of the park on the first swing. Rejection is a big part of the process, so you just have to get comfortable with that. The tricky part is you also have to nurture an almost delusional sense of confidence that one day things will work out, despite all evidence to the contrary.
Jill Orr The best thing about being a novel writer, specifically, is getting to be the Supreme Overlord of your fictional world. I always wanted to be an overlord and never really thought I'd get the chance (the husband and kids are rather attached to their precious "free will"). So when I discovered that as a fiction writer you can CONTROL ALL THE THINGS, I was delighted and knew I'd found the perfect job. Plus, you can go to work most days in your jammies.
Jill Orr Reading inspires me more than anything else, but I find inspiration everywhere - overhearing bits of a stranger's conversation, a funny story someone tells at a cocktail party, listening to my kids talk about their days at school. I often whip out my phone and jot down notes about these sorts of things. The only problem is half the time I can't read what I wrote!
Jill Orr I'm working on the second book in the Riley Ellison mysteries series. It's been so fun to hang out with Riley and Holman again. I'm loving it!
Jill Orr The same way I deal with a head cold or a bad hair day: I push through it! Not saying it's easy, but as long as you keep writing, eventually things start clicking again.
