Matthew Moss I can't say that I've ever really had writer's block. To me, writer's block is when ideas just stop flowing and even the most uncreative people always have ideas flowing through their heads, its only a matter of making the most of those ideas. The closest thing to writer's block that I ever get is when I just don't feel like writing and, more often than not, the solution to that problem is just to start writing. Within a few minutes I'm usually so involved in writing that I lose track of time and am almost late for work.
Matthew Moss For aspiring authors, I would recommend the obvious stuff such as read within the genre you're writing and get your book professionally edited. However, the biggest thing I can recommend is to realize and accept some hard truths about writing: It takes lots of patience. It took me a year to write my book and another year to get it published - and I self-published; it could take longer with traditional publishing. It takes a LOT of work and dedication. If I only wrote when I felt like it then it would've take even longer to write; at times I had to force myself to write even when I'd rather be doing something else. Self-publishing is expensive. It costs thousands of dollars to get your book edited and published and thousands more to market the book, stay diligent. What I constantly told myself throughout the writing and publishing process was that I refused to take shortcuts and I refused to go cheap. I wouldn't risk the success of my book simply because I went cheap and didn't get my book edited or refused to use paid advertising. With all of that being said, writing has been very rewarding and I can't recommend it enough to those who have a passion for it.
Matthew Moss I don't have to have everything setup just right in order to be inspired, but I do have different inscence that I like to burn and hot teas that I like to drink. I also like to write in a dark room, lit only by the light of my desk lamp. All of these things help me feel relaxed and get me ready to write. That being said, I can write just about anywhere. I take my notebook with me everywhere (I handwrite my books) and, if I get the opportunity, I open it and jot down a few paragraphs.
Matthew Moss Now that my debut book, After The Last Battle, is out the door I have started putting more of my time into writing the sequel, After The Last Battle: The Citadel.
Matthew Moss I was actually mowing the yard listening to music when I got the idea for this book. The song "Where Did All The Angels Go?" by Papa Roach came on and it got me thinking about a story centered around a world without angels. I answered this question in more detail in my Vlog.
